Bhubaneswar: The state steel and mines department is likely to face a big problem as the Centre-appointed panel visited the state today to probe the illegal mining activities.

The state government has also sent the showcause notices to 57 mines for allegedly violating the mining laws before the Justice M B Shah Commission reached the state capital Bhubaneswar today.

The Centre's move came after the mining scam was unearthed in 2009. It is reported that the mining in forest areas were allowed without any clearance from the authorities. Hundreds of mining operations have been suspended following the allegations.
