Berhampur: There is no respite from the rising dead bodies of Olive Ridley turtles at Nolia Nuagaon area in Ganjam district. The forest officials have so far recovered 70 dead bodies.

The Olive Ridley turtles had come for mass nesting to the sea shore in Ganjam. While some deaths are said to be natural, other deaths were caused by the fishing trawlers

Even though fishing is banned in the 170-km long coastal area in Odisha from November 1 to May 31 from 5-10 km away from the shore to protect the turtles, the rising death toll is really alarming.

The Olive Ridley turtles come in large numbers for nesting in Kantiagada and Gokaharakuda beaches near Rushikulya river mouth. The region is the second major mass nesting site for the Olive Ridley after Gahirmatha.
