Nabarangpur: The inevitable happened again. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has established its supremacy yet again by winning the Umerkote bypoll by a huge margin of over 21,000 votes.
Â
BJD candidate Subash Gond secured 54,713 votes, pushing BJP candidate Dharmu Gond to second spot. Dharmu Gond got 33,652 votes. The Congress improved its vote share, but finished third, as its candidate Jatrinda Gond polled 32,877 votes.
Â
The BJP surged way ahead, riding high on the campaigning of its stars, including the MLAs, MPs, Ministers and top leaders, who camped in the area throughout the polls. There was a big contest between the BJP and Congress and both parties polled almost equal number of votes.
Â
The assembly bypoll in Umerkote was held on November 30 after the gruesome killing of Jagabandhu Majhi by suspected Maoists on September 24. The BJD heaved a sigh of relief with this victory ahead of the panchayat polls in the state.
