Editor's Desk: The shocking reality within the Maoist camps in Odisha has come to light with more and more Maoist women coming up and alleging sexual harassment.

A few weeks ago, a woman Maoist had sent a letter to the media and police with allegations of sexual harassment by Maoist sympathiser Dandapani Mohanty. Another Maoist woman cadre also did the same, raising questions on Dandapani's involvement in Maoist activities.

Whenever women Maoists surrendered in Odisha, they alleged ill-treatment, sexual exploitation and torture. That has raised a big question mark on the Maoist movement, which claims to be in the people's interest, but not in reality.

Two Maoist women cadres Martha Majhi alias Minita (20) of Luding village and Mary Majhi alias Kabita (18) from Gajapati district, who surrendered last week, had alleged that women are treated badly and severely punished for minor mistakes inside the camps. They also alleged sexual harassment by senior cadres.

Another woman ultra, Jayanti Mahanta from Keonjhar district who surrendered on Tuesday, had come up with similar allegations. She alleged that most women and girls in Maoist camps are being subjected to physical torture and sexual harassment.

This is a grave concern that the Maoists have now become inhuman and torturing the girls and women, whom they had lured to join the movement. It should serve as an eye-opener for all women and young girls and discourage them from joining the Maoist activities.
